Celebration: 60 years!

Celebrating Greg's birthday was the focus of our April getaway! He wanted to plan the weekend (he was keeping things low key and he knows I'm not so low key) so he made dinner reservations, hotel reservations and plans for how he wanted to celebrate!
We had dinner on his birthday at a local steakhouse restaurant. Our very good friends (we are called the gaggle group!) joined us and we had a very relaxing and fun time. Here are the six of us at the end of dinner! The restaurant brought out a sample of their famous fried cheesecake, decorated with "Happy Birthday" on the plate - it was quite tasty!
We stayed Friday night in Pacific City. Beth and Bryan gave us a gift certificate for a night at the Inn and we decided to use it for this special weekend. It's a wonderful Inn and had lots of the coastal charm!
We also got matching T-shirts from Beth and Bryan from the restaurant across the highway - it's owned by the Inn- and Greg decided to show his "best side" as he puts it! He is standing on the balcony of room, looking at Haystack Rock. It's the most famous landmark in that area.

The dory boats come into the cape; we were fortunate to see one as it was coming in. The season is usually June - September. You definitely have to be watching out for them during dory season if you are on the beach.
One of the best parts of our weekend was being able to take Rusty with us! The Inn caters to dogs - even giving us blankets, towels, and doggy treats just for our pet! Rusty LOVES the beach and is so happy to spend his time running up and down the sand dunes!
Our balcony was the resting place for Rusty. He loved going outside and watching all the activity. We laughed when we saw him making friends with the "neighbor!" The three of us-can you tell we are having a grand time!
All good things must come to an end and we had a glorious sunset to end our time on the beach! Greg truly enjoyed his birthday and loved the time we had together. He says turning 60 wasn't so bad after all! Happy Birthday, Greg! Love you lots!!

OH My Aching Back!

It all started out on Saturday morning - quite cool (around 38 degrees) but the sun was shining so out I went. I had the front bed to finish and I was determined to get it done. In the background is the rose bed -and now for the rest of the bed!
I am at the last bit of the weeding. Once this was done, it was a big chore to remove all the old bark and replace the weed barrier. The old stuff wasn't working, hence the weeding! My supervisor! He loves the yard and kept an eye on me. No slacking allowed with him! (Of course Rusty gets to just lie around - oh for the dog's life!)Weed barrier is down and new plants are in. I managed to salvage a lot of them and even divided the primroses so now there is a border. I hope they all make it! The last of the bark dust is down for the front. It's really nice and quite open. The plants will eventually fill in the area and it won't look so "young." On to the side yard and then the drip irrigation...maybe soon......hopefully so if the weather continues to hold...and so does my back!

All This for A Bed

What started out as getting new mattress set ended up being a total make-over of our upstairs. One thing led to another and 6 weeks later, the project is ALMOST done!!! (It's those boxes of packed up "stuff" that still need to be emptied.)
First we decided to paint the walls a muted yellow color. We wanted a summer-like feel to the room, especially on those rainy, dreary winter days. So out come the paint brushes and three days of prepping, priming, and painting. Love the color!
Okay, the walls are done and the carpet has to go! It's horrible! So we went carpet shopping. Once there we decided that we needed to do the entire upstairs; the guest bedroom carpet was just as ugly as our room-only blue-so more decisions to be made. Oh wait, then the hallway carpet needed to come out and that meant the stairs as well.......But it doesn't end there. Oh no....now we had to paint the hallway and stairs (that was fun!). So back to Lowe's we went to pick out paint colors. We kept the hallway walls a creamy white and it really has brightened up the upstairs. Finally the carpet arrives - three weeks after we orderd it - and the installers worked for 8 hours to get it all in! We LOVE the results. It's so much better; we just wonder why we didn't do this sooner!
So here's the new mattress set in and we are ready to put the room back together! All this for a bed.....one day we may learn that we don't just do a simple project....not us.....we have to make sure it is a major makeover! Can't wait to start the kitchen (not!)!

Coming Home

It's been 7 years since I planted roses and I am really excited to have my new rose bed. I only have 6 rose bushes but I am looking forward to seeing them all in bloom. Every home I have had since Lynn was born has had a rose planted just for her - and of course, it's a yellow tea rose. Her rose is aptly named "Coming Home."

We have clay soil (or as I call it, disgusting soil) so I have added a compost garden soil and prepared the bed. It's looking good!
The roses are in....5 in the front....and a climbing one on the side yard (which has not been finished yet!). The middle rose is Lynn's.
Down goes the weed barrier - I hate to weed, especially in the rain! - and on top is a mulched layer of bark dust. It's not so much dust as it would appear and is very splintery (if that's a word!). The next part of the project is to put the drip irrigation in. Then I can sit back and enjoy the blooms!

Well, butter my buns....

And call me a biscuit....(More on that whole subject later on). Our March date weekend was in Lincoln City. I surprised Greg with a trip to some fabulous restaurants, and an appointment with the glassblowers! We had a blast! So here are the pictures from our glassblowing:
I'm just starting with the first blob of molten glass. I had to keep turning it to cool it down and begin the shaping process for adding color.Adding the colors: blue, green and white Greg did the same thing as I did. He's tweezing his colors in (he chose pink and purple).Greg's done blowing his float - the colors aren't nearly set. They put them in a kiln overnight to get the colors to fire in.
The results! We will remember this experience for a very long time! So after the glass blowing, we hung out at Depoe Bay looking for a mat....more at the end of the story.....and we spent the afternoon just browsing the shops. It was very windy with winds gusting at 60 mph, and pelting rain, but we had fun running from shop to shop! Even bad weather on the beach is good day! We ended up at the Surftide Motel back in Lincoln City in a room with a fireplace and our private beachfront balcony.
Here's the view from our balcony.....very romantic! And now for the rest of the story......Greg found this mat last summer when we were whale watching with my sister and brother-in-law. Greg and Beth laughed about how we should buy it and have outside for when they come to visit! So.......while in Depoe Bay, we went from shop to shop (because of course, we couldn't remember which shop it was in!), and finally discovered it! So here it is (we like saying "Butter my buns" but I guess the original saying is as it says above!). These date weekends are way fun and I'm so thankful we are doing them!

Mardi Gras

King Cakes are a huge part of Mardi Gras traditions throughout the south. The cake's origins date back to the Feast of the Epiphany or Twelfth Night, which honors the three kings present at the Christ child's birth. Which is most likely where the custom of hiding a tiny baby doll in the cake started.
Tradition calls for the person who gets the "lucky" piece of cake with the baby doll inside, to throw the next party or make the next King Cake. The cake closely resembles a rich, sweet bread is decorated in teh traditional Mardi Gras colors: green, representing faith; gold, symbolizing power; purple, dnoting justice.
I made this King Cake for Greg's office - we'll see who gets to make the next one!

OPERATION KLONDIKE!

So this is how the February weekend getaway went.....
  • I wanted to know where we were going (up until 2/18)
  • He wouldn't tell (more on that later!)
  • I told him okay, now I don't want to know and oh by the way, you get to pack for me AND if you pack the wrong clothes, you get to buy me more clothes (SCORE is what I'm thinking!)

mmmmm.......now that I know the entire story.....all I can do is just laugh! We are truly enjoying ourselves and our weekend getaways! I can't wait for March!

So on Wednesday 2/18, I asked Greg where we were going (for the last time). He said, "we're going to Mt. Rainier and doing some snowshoeing." At which I promptly replied "yea, right!"

Well.....it turns out he wasn't kidding! Greg had planned for us to go up to Mt. Rainier when we first decided to do these weekends....so he enlisted Beth and Bryan to help....now, this was clear back in December 2008! Way before I decided on January's getaway! So when I understood where we were going (and it wasn't until Friday night when we were headed down the final stretch to Beth and Bryan's that I believed him), I had a big laugh. Greg and I are so much alike in our thinking sometimes and this was one more example! Here are some pictures of our fabulously wonderful weekend!
Greg named this weekend Operation Klondike when he realized I had planned our January getaway up to Mt. Rainier. He, Beth and Bryan would converse and refer to his plans in the code name to keep me in the dark!
Yes it was Greg's idea first and I have to admit we had an even better time this weekend than in January. Beth and Bryan had their blocks with this phrase already on the mantle when we arrived! How they must have chuckled over keeping these secrets!
This is the place where we rent our snowshoes. In January, there was snow on the ground. It's all gone for now but more snow is predicted for the coming week....
The mountain was majestic and awesome. We were very blessed to have had such a glorious day!
We are dressed in fewer layers on this trip - it was quite warm (at least above freezing) and with the sun out, it was toasty at times! This was one of the steep climbs we undertook. Greg is actually 1/2 way up the hill when he stopped and took pictures of us beginning the ascent. We snowshoed for 4 hours and were exhausted at the end of the trek. Great day it was!
